One of my kids -- a smart, funny, gentle, kind, creative guy -- has been a target for bullies since fourth grade. Different bullies, different settings. We've talked to teachers, coaches, counselors to make sure our kid is doing everything he can to avoid being the chosen one, and they all agree that there's no objective reason for him to get picked on more than any other kid...they also agree that he gets more than his fair share of bullying. Last year, one kid started calling him gay. When we were trouble shooting an effective response, I mentioned that it would be okay if he *were* gay. I didn't think he was, but I also think it needs to be said, repeatedly. "Oh, I'm not, Mom," he said. "I just hate that they think it's an insult to call me that."

This school year started with a physical assault -- the school's words, not mine. They notified the sheriff and suspended the kid. We chose not to pursue it because we didn't think it'd help. And while that kid has backed way off, others are still in the picture with their verbal claws, waiting for him to reveal his soft underbelly. Sadly, he is so used to it that it's a fact of life for him, but it breaks my heart. He is still sunshiney and light-seeking and I know he is a strong, strong kid who's going to great things, but I wish he didn't have to deal with it.

When he gets home today, I'm going to show him this.

So we have been having a crazy stormy summer and yesterday evening was no exception. I was kind of shocked to find my very own FULL DOUBLE RAINBOW on the precise day I posted the Yosemitebear double rainbow video here.

Rest assured, dear readers, that I did not babble, moan, sob, or take video footage. But it was still pretty nifty!

The second rainbow was just out of range of my phone's camera, so here's another view:

The top rainbow was fainter, but it did, in fact go alllll the way across the sky! The promised four pots of gold have yet to be located, but searchers haven't yet given up hope. Beezers are good that way.

Does this mean two pots of gold, or four?

Happiness doesn't usually land in your lap...sometimes you have to go looking for it. Beezers numbers 1 & 3 recently took a field trip in search of a little joy.

And what better place to start than here*:

In spite of the tickle torturing pedicurist and his coworker, the Scruberator, our tootsies turned out great!

We even felt lucky to have gone before the little old lady who announced that weird stuff on her foot had been described as {shudder} fungus. We were proud of ourselves for not busting out laughing, too. Unfortunately, unlike the staff, we didn't have an Asian language at our disposal to secretly discuss the fungal dilemma. Luckily we were almost done!

Feeling a little slumpy? Treat your tootsies to some TLC, America!

*PS: Notice that Happy Nails is right next door to Happy Wok. We will have to try their happy lunch some other day.

Do you remember when s n a i l m a i l was all we had? I haunted the mailbox in search of news from camp friends, grandparents, or magazines. Getting mail was tangible proof that someone, somewhere, had been thinking of you.

And then there were packages! What a treat!

Here is a fantastic little video about the joy of unexpected mail. (I'd embed the video but vimeo informs me that's not possible).

As a grown-up, I've developed some sort of postal phobia. I still like making packages and writing letters, but I can't seem to finish the task: wrap up the package, drag myself to the post office, and drop it in the slot or bin. This is silly on so many levels, mostly because once I finally do it, I thrill with anticipation of the receiver getting it. Sending a package is just as good as getting one!

So here is a beezer challenge: make someone happy. Send a package! If funds are short, send a letter! Make it yourself or handpick the contents. Let someone know you were thinking of them. And in case you, too, have postal phobia, here's a deadline: send it by Monday, Sept 28. (This will go down on your permanent record.)
